Nope - not the song.
On this day in 1093, Winchester Cathedral in England was dedicated by Bishop Walkelin. The largest Gothic cathedral in Europe was built in only 14 years! One wonders why it took sometimes hundreds of years to build some of the more "modern" cathedrals of the 14th and 15th centuries.
Some notable events in the history of the Cathedral:
1403 - Marriage of King Henry IV to Joanna of Navarre
1554 - Marriage of Queen Mary I of England to King Phillip II of Spain
1817 - Funeral and burial of Jane Austen - who's grave brings in thousands of tourists every year
In addition there are several ancient Saxon kings whose remains are housed in the Cathedral, as well as those of St. Swithin - one of the three Saints the Cathedral is dedicated to.
