On this day in 1881
ushered in the era of Prohibition 40 years early by amending their constitution to prohibit the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages. For the record, national Prohibition didn't begin until 1920, ending in 1933 with a law that allows each state to decide for itself the liquor issue. The result was a checkerboard of laws across the country and even in some states with "dry counties" and "dry towns". To finish this fact of the day with another Kansas fact - it wasn't until 1987, that Kansas law allowed the sale of "liquor by the drink" in establishments.
