Thursday Thirteen #18

Nearly everyone is familiar with the name Thomas Alva Edison as the inventor of the electric lightbulb. As a prolific inventor, he still holds nearly 2,000 U.S. patents. But, there was another side of him - one that went hand in hand with the inventor - the entrepreneur. During his lifetime, he set up, sold, merged with, or bankrupted many companies. It seems as if he set up a new company each time he invented something new and wanted to sell it. See for yourself as I present
Thirteen Companies Linked to Thomas Edison

1. Edison Ore Milling Company
2. Edison Portland Cement Company
3. Edison Electric Lamp Company
4. Edison Phonograph Company
5. Edison Manufacturing Company
6. Edison Illuminating Company
7. Edison Speaking Phonograph Company
8. Edison Motion Picture Studios
9. Pope, Edison and Company
10. American Telegraph Works
11. Motion Picture Patents Company (The Trust)
12. Thomas A. Edison Company
13. General Electric (the only company still in existence today)

This is "death week" on my blog, so today's question is:
Thomas Alva Edison died on October 18 in what year?

Very interesting!!!!
And I must say, I think this is the first time I've visited your blog.

I'll be back.

My T T is posted. Won't you stop by for a visit?

This reminds me of the Simpsons' episode where Homer gets obsessed with Edison and tries frantically to invent something so he can compete with him.

Many of the defunct companies sound familiar. Maybe it's because Edison's name is attached to them. Although I could easily look it up, I am going to guess that Edison died in 1940.

No nonsense - I'm glad you found me. Come back often and play.

Robin - I didn't know that he lived in Michigan - and I go back there regularly because my ILs live there. I'll have to check it out.

Anni - thanks for dropping by and, by all means, please come back again

Ann - I remember that episode. Like all the rest, it was very funny.

Malcolm - yeah, I thought the same thing - he wasn't shy about using his name was he? Oh, and you're a few years off on the year he died. Feel free to try again.

Interesting facts! And I'm sure his name gets taken in vain a lot as part of Commonwealth Edison, my local utility company. :)

FAscinating list. I read somewhere that he had the knack of being able to cat nap just about anywhere, regardless of what was going on around him.

Neat list! I didn't realize he had so many companies. Thanks for visiting my blog.

Very cool stuff. Was it him or Ford who has this huge museum and grounds outside of Detroit? It's been so long, I don't remember! (and yes, I'm mortified by that)

Blogger Denise Patrick said...
Susan - it must be Ford as Detroit isn't called the Motor City for nothing.

Nicholas - I hadn't read that. Interesting fact, if true.

Right again, Jessie. Thanks for playing.

Sorry I'm late too. But I know the answer: Mr. Edison died in 1931. My grandfather was a police officer in West Orange at the time.
