Maria Anna Mozart, affectionately known as "Nannerl" died on this day in 1829.
A gifted musician in her own right, she was not given the opportunities her brother received because, as a woman, once she grew into womanhood, she was expected to marry. Their father, Leopold, taught both children and toured with them as sort of a manager when they were small. More likely, however, he recognized their genius and was merely exploiting them.
The two children were said to have been very close, but their temperaments were different. Unlike her brother, Maria bowed to their father's wishes and turned down the proposal of the man she loved, and instead married the man chosen for her by her father. Although Wolfgang urged her to follow her heart, she refused. These differences in attitudes would later strain the brother/sister relationship.Today's Question: Was Maria older or younger than Wolfgang?
