Today is the feast day of this Saint (painting c. 1480 by Botticelli) because he died on this day in the year 430.
Fast forward to the year 1565. On this day in that year Spanish Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés first sighted the land on which he would establish a settlement for Spain in the New World. It would not be the first attempt at settling in the new land, but it would be the most enduring. The admiral named this new place after the saint on whose feast day he first sighted the land. This Day in History: Today, that settlement is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in the continental United States. Name it.
