On August 15, 1248, Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden laid the foundation stone for this monumental gothic cathedral. The largest one in northern Europe, it was the tallest structure in the world until the Washington Monument was completed.
It is also a pilgrim destination - holding the relics of the Three Kings. The gold sarcophagus is the largest reliquary in the western world, and is traditionally believed to hold the bones and some clothing of the Three Kings.
As you can see, the interior is not dark as you might have expected from something started during the Middle Ages. This Day in History: This cathedral was completed on August 14, 1880. Where is it?
