The Merry Month of May
Today is May 1, also known as May Day, and a new month for historical facts and fun. I thought I'd start this month with some interesting tidbits about May 1. . .

Today is Beltaine, an ancient Gaelic and Celtic holiday.
It is Labour Day in many countries around the world. But, not the US.
In northern Europe it is celebrated as Walpurgis Night with many of the same traditions as Beltaine.

Born on this Day:
1218 - Rudolph I (Hapsburg) of Austria, Holy Roman Emperor
1831 - Emily Stowe, Canadian physician and suffragist
1852 - Calamity Jane, American Wild West performer
1909 - Kate Smith, American singer

Died on this Day:
1308 - Albert I (Hapsburg) of Germany, Holy Roman Emperor
1539 - Isabella of Portugal, queen of Spain and Empress of Germany
1572 - Pope Pius V
1904 - Antonin Dvořák - Czech composer

Anyone who posts a comment between now and when I post my next "This Day in History" question about any of the tidbits above will go into the drawing for May.

Happy May!

Most countries celebrate Labour Day on May 1, known as May Day. In Canada, where I am, we celebrate it on the first Monday in September; very interesting!!!

* the onions are delicious as a salad or with hamburgers or on hamburgers for onion lovers.
