Since today is my birthday, I thought I'd take a look at Life and Death on This Day in History. I'm surprised at the number of people who are considered important enough that history sites will list their birthdays and death dates. For me, the lists indicate what we as a society, and moreso what the people who compile those lists, feel are important.
For instance, I noticed further back in history, the people were the "shakers and movers" of their days - the rulers, reformers, and renaissance people. As the list moved closer to this year, more athletes, rock stars, and movie stars seemed to make the list - with only a few statesmen thrown in for occasional balance. But, since I'm not here to comment on society in general, we'll move on.
So, let's give a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" in honor of the following famous, infamous, and not so famous born on this day. . .
1554 - Pope Gregory XV
1620 - Johann Weichmann (composer)
1859 - Carrie Lane Chapman Catt (founder League of Women Voters)
1870 - Joseph B. Strauss (engineer/builder of Golden Gate Bridge)
1901 - Chic Young (cartoonist)
1914 - Gypsy Rose Lee (burlesque actress)
1928 - Judith Krantz (author)
1935 - Bob Denver (actor)
1941 - Joan Baez (singer/human rights advocate)
And a moment of silence for those who passed on. . .
1324 - Marco Polo (explorer)
1878 - Victor Emmanuel II (King of Sardinia)
1908 - Wilhelm Busch (author)
1939 - Johann Strauss (Conductor/Ball director)
1957 - Mary Carr Moore (composer)
And now for today's fact:This Day in History: The only US President ever to resign from office, Richard M. Nixon, was born on this date in Yorba Linda, CA, in what year?
